I suppose the unofficial unemployment rate should use the take up rate for all taxi drivers from the taxi leasing companies in Singapore. Our super low level of employment is really a figure from heaven. A even more accurate way of capturing unemployment rate is to use the number of stopped CPF contributions of Singapore or PRs as a gauge to check employment rate.
I am sure CPF have the means to compute this.

Where is the "Singaporeans First" policies, or are we simply the same as foreigners.
ReplyDeleteWhat are we. Can the President tells us.
Fact is that in s'pore if you're 40+ and get retrenched, it's very very tough just to get another job, don't even have to talk about getting a job with similar pay. Even NTUC and civil service do not employ jobless and retrenched PMETs above 40 easily, unless they are CEO or CFO level.
ReplyDeleteBoth CPF and IRAS are in the know of which Singaporeans are unemployed, and how many. Obviously CPF knows simply by filtering out those Singaporeans who are younger than 62 but have no regular CPF contributions over the past 3 months or 6 months or 12 months. CPF shares some of this info with IRAS. And IRAS automatically sends letters to those who have no contributions to CPF for 1 year or more, telling them that they no longer need to file income tax, unless they have some other type of income not captured by CPF e.g. rental income or self-employed income.
There is also some unwritten rule of thumb adopted by PAP that if a person is not formally employed for over 1 year i.e. no regular CPF contributions, that person is considered as either retired or self-employed. Hence not an unemployed person.
In New York, all Taxi drivers are foreigners. In Singapore, taxi drivers are Singaporeans.
ReplyDeleteThis only implies one simple truth, Singaporeans do not look after Singaporeans. A selfish society.
I am a former hotel's director who was forced to resigned due to my past bankrupcy status that I did not declare when I took out this job( I was desperate to get back to Singapore as I was working overseas and by declaring there will be no chances for me to get hired).
ReplyDeleteI have been jobless for the last 2 months sending over 100 job applications without any single reply. Its not that I am choosy or demanding, I even try to get a simple job like driver or downgrade myself from jobs available from my industries but no one called.
I found out that my 10K director's job was given to a foreigner. So if you expecting that the govt will help you, fat hope.I am 45 yrs old, have been working in top hotels in Singapore and overseas but I resigned to my fate and at present trying to get a vocational licence to be a Taxi driver...
good luck to u to become a taxi driver!u still gotta wait to get a vehicle to drive!Comfort and Transcab waiting time 3-6 months!unless u become a relief that means most probably driving at nights then unless ur fit and have good eyesight and have some driving experience or u will be a hazard on the roads!not to say whether ur familiar with the routes esp at night!
